MakerSpace
Grand Valley Creative Alliance (GVCA) has identified the need for a community-based, non-profit Maker Space within the Grand Junction Creative District that would complement the existing creative spaces in the community.
Our MakerSpace Committee heard your voices and has been actively looking for a space that will meet the needs of the community. GVCA is in the process of identifying property that can serve as a community-based makerspace, where creatives come to make art, to meet, to hold workshops, to be creative!
Our goal is to find a space large enough to have studios for rent, a community room where creatives can store their materials and have space to work, galleries which would showcase and sell art from members, spaces for workshops, co-working, and meetings.
MakerSpace Guiding Principles
- Must be self-sustaining
- Model roughly on Manitou Springs Art Center, Art Lab Fort Collins, and other similar spaces
- Focus on activities not easily done at home - in studio spaces such as wet studio, darkroom, ceramics, etc.
- Space for tenants and public use with tiered rental fees (for a shelf/locker in a common room, for a larger space, hourly vs. daily vs. monthly)
- Focus on a few things rather than trying to please everyone
- Target audience - begin with focus on adults (young, middle-age, elderly)
- Educational component
- Collaborate with and fill the gaps between other facilities in the region
MakerSpace Desired Space Needs
- Access to ample parking (could be offset by adequate public transit)
- ADA Compliance
- Location - preferably downtown GJ, preferably within/adjacent to GJ Creative District, which mirrors DDA boundaries
- Start with smaller footprint (decreased cost); can grow over time
- Procure building first; buildout can occur over time
- Purchase preferable to lease (unless lease could be long-term - would depend on owner)
